What a weekend!
3 September 2002, 1:15 PM

If you didn't read my blog this weekend, you should check out Saturday's early morning entry. My labor day weekend started out WAY more exciting than I care for.

Shortly after I had arrived at my parents house for the weekend, my neighbor's house burned down. Neither I nor my dad (my mom was at work) had any idea that a blaze was starting until fire trucks arrived and we got the shock of our lives, seeing the two story structure (frighteningly close to OUR house) engulfed in flames at 2:30am.

Even though I'd arrived completely bushed after having got up early in the morning, worked and then driven for nearly four-and-a-half hours, I was wide awake the rest of that night. I just couldn't sleep, even after I knew that our house was no longer in danger. So I went outside and jotted down everything that had happened and then logged in and wrote it up in my blog.

I finally fell asleep at about 6:30am, when the fire next door was completely out. The firefighters didn't leave until about 8:00am, just as my mom was returning from work. (She works nights as a nurse in a hospital.) I got up again and sleepily informed her of the nights events. After a bit of applesauce and talking with my mom I was awake enough to notice a few people out at the edge of the street in front of the neighbor's house, so I trotted on down our drive to go talk to 'em, hoping to find out how to CONTACT our neighbor's who still had no idea what had happened.

Through somebody who knew somebody who knew somebody we were finally able to contact a family member. The grandmother lived nearby and she came out to see what had happened. I could see the total shock on her face when she drove up. She cried a bit, then called her daughter up - it turns out our neighbors were INDEED away for the Labor Day weekend. (Thankfully - otherwise they might have been home in their beds when the fire started.) They'd left for a family reunion in Tennessee, so when they heard the news at least they were surrounded by family.

Dad and I slept for most of the morning, and I got up in just enough time to get something to eat and head out to the annual Trivial Pursuit game that Jeff's folks play with some old family friends every year. Guys and against the Gals. We gals won. :-)

I spent Sunday with my sister, checking out "Lenghas" and "Shararas". I'd like to wear one of these for my wedding. Here's an example of one that I like. After that we had some chum-chums (an Indian sweet) from the restaurant nearby, went shopping at a Mediterranean foods grocery store, and then saw an IMAX film about Australia at the science museum.

The day ended significantly better than it started.

Oh, and in case you didn't know: Our sun apparently produced a X1 class solar flare on Sunday. Apparently flares of this size, if directed at earth, can cause planet wide radio blackouts. Here's some cool info:
