I am such a Texan, I swear. It's such a gorgeous weekend that I and my sweetie decided to go have a
picnic. In Lost Maples. About 150 miles from here.
Oh, all-right, we DO plan to do a little more than just picnic. we're
going to hike the trails etc.... I've never been there so I can't wait to
see it. Lost Maples
State natural Area is one of the few places in Texas with a collection
of trees that turn vibrant colors in the Fall. It's is also one of the
three places in Texas that is home to what archaeologists call "relic
plants". (Old growth that hasn't been changed by humans. In some cases
this can means hundreds to thousands of years.) There's also evidence here
that the area was used by pre-historic
peoples at various times.
As an aside, here's an interesting article about preserving relic plants
at grave-sites.
But still - it's 150 miles for a picnic. We so used to driving LOOOOONG
distances out there that driving a few hours is nothing. My commute one
way to work used to be 85 miles.
You know, when human beings become a space-faring people, I swear it'll be
the Texans who say, "Aw shucks, that's only a couple a thousand parsecs
from here...."
