200 Miles for a Picnic
21 September 2002, 10:26 AM

I am such a Texan, I swear.

It's such a gorgeous weekend that I and my sweetie decided to go have a picnic. In Lost Maples. About 150 miles from here.

Oh, all-right, we DO plan to do a little more than just picnic. we're going to hike the trails etc.... I've never been there so I can't wait to see it. Lost Maples State natural Area is one of the few places in Texas with a collection of trees that turn vibrant colors in the Fall. It's is also one of the three places in Texas that is home to what archaeologists call "relic plants". (Old growth that hasn't been changed by humans. In some cases this can means hundreds to thousands of years.) There's also evidence here that the area was used by pre-historic peoples at various times.

As an aside, here's an interesting article about preserving relic plants at grave-sites.

But still - it's 150 miles for a picnic. We so used to driving LOOOOONG distances out there that driving a few hours is nothing. My commute one way to work used to be 85 miles.

You know, when human beings become a space-faring people, I swear it'll be the Texans who say, "Aw shucks, that's only a couple a thousand parsecs from here...."

Center of Online Population

Got this in my e-mail today:

Europe is the new centre of the web world.

Europe has become the new centre of the internet world, according to a report from the NUA, which shows internet penetration levels static throughout much of the rest of the world. Commenting to the Guardian newspaper, president of the Internet Advertisers Bureau, Danny Meadows-Klue said, "This is a turning point in the internet's development. The world's focus is shifting to Europe and the online media are coming of age. The fact that more people are now online in Europe than in the US is staggering and companies that understand the new economy are best placed to exploit these growing audiences." Significant findings of the report are that Europeans now account for 32 per cent of all internet users, with 186m regularly logging on. 183m do so in America, while 168m users in the Asia-Pacific region use the web regularly.
