Appalling!

Found this CNN news article on Medley's site today: As family shrieks, police kill dog.

COOKEVILLE, Tennessee (CNN) -- Police video released Wednesday showed a North Carolina family kneeling and handcuffed, who shrieked as officers killed their dog -- which appeared to be playfully wagging its tail -- with a shotgun during a traffic stop.

The Smoak family was pulled over the evening of January 1 on Interstate 40 in eastern Tennessee by officers who mistakenly suspected them of a carjacking. An investigation showed James Smoak had simply left his wallet on the roof of his car at a gas station, and motorists who saw his money fly off the car as he drove away called police.

As someone who considers my pets my family members (I don't want to have human children, my furry four-footed creatures are my children), my heart goes out to this family. I'm just aghast at what they went through: They're pleading with the officer to close the doors of the cars so the dogs won't get out and he refuses. OF COURSE one does get around and happily bounds around on the edge of the interstate, about to get run over! The family calls him to them and the officer shoots the dog in the head!!! I'd have been shrieking and crying too! Gods.

And trust me, it's an absolutely devastating feeling to lose a pet this way. I know, because years ago my dog and my best friend's dog happened to dig out of her backyard. When Marty limped home with a bullet hole in his shoulder we found Laddie, shot dead and dumped on the edge of her property. Both dogs collars had been taken. You can read the complete story here.

I'll never understand how some people can be so horribly cruel.

Argyria, Big Brother and Blind Salamanders

Random stuff today.

This was fascinating: "Silver Health Scams Spread Online". I'd never heard of argyria before, but the effects are pretty dramatic.

And I just found about this: Traveler Logs. " If you travel overseas so much -- or so infrequently -- you can't keep track of past itineraries, consider this: The government is already doing it for you. Under new rules, U.S. airlines and passenger ships are now required to electronically forward information to the Immigration and Naturalization Service -- including date of birth and passport numbers -- on all travelers leaving or entering the country."

From the BBC: Internet helps write the book of life. " A hugely ambitious project to find and name every species on Earth within the next 25 years has been launched by scientists. The internet and the development of DNA sequencing technology make the goal achievable, they say." They even mention the blind salamander, and Austin native.
