Ooooh, this was a GOOD one for me this time:Friday Five:
1. How many houses/apartments have you lived in throughout your
life?
8 apartments, 2 rented houses, 1 house my parents owned, 3 hotel rooms
(yes, *lived* in), and as a guest of my best friend in her mobile home for
10 months. That's 15 places total. 5 different states, 10 different
cities.
I'm about to move into the first house that I own, along with my (eep)
husband. (That term is going to take some getting used to.)
2. Which was your favorite and why?
I never got attached to any of those places.
3. Do you find moving house more exciting or stressful? Why?
Stressful? Oh dear gods, yes. It didn't used to bother me. In fact, as a
kid I probably did find it exciting. But I can barely remember those
feelings now. In the last 8 years I have gone through the process of
moving me or my parents 10 times. The thought of taking this down off the
walls and packing them up again and carting them downstairs makes my
throat close up.
UNpacking is okay. That's akin to opening presents, decorating, or tidying
up and I'm fine with that. But ripping everything out of it's place and
boxing it up just bothers me immensely.
4. What's more important, location or price?
Location. I'm tired of living cheek to jowl with others, especially when
most of the human species seems so inconsiderate and in love with
concrete and asphalt. I want space, greenery and quiet.
5. What features does your dream house have (pool, spa bath, big yard,
etc.)?
Ah - the dream home. I'm clipping pictures from magazines and will
eventually draw up plans. It changes a lot, but there's a few constant
features: a HUGE old-fashioned Scandinavian fireplace between the kitchen
and a living area. You know, the kind in old castles where they hung a
huge iron pot? Lots of windows and light. A really usable kitchen, with
separate "butler's pantry" to hide the dirty dishes. A big mud room
leading into the kitchen and herb garden. A dutch door from the kitchen.
Two stories, with the bedroom upstairs. One of those tightly wound iron
staircases leading from the library upstairs down to the breakfast nook.
A combination bathroom, open airy closet/dressing room, with a fireplace.
Furniture fixtures (like an armoire) in the bathroom instead of the usual
cabinetry. A window seat somewhere. A secret room somewhere. :-)
