Surprise, surprise...

*sigh* U.S. grows worried as Iraqi Shiites gain clout

Janis wrote a good bit about this a few days ago.

Me? I just wish I could send most of our population BACK TO SCHOOL to learn some geography and social studies. It just blows my mind that this country's LEADERS are surprised at this turn of events. If they knew the history of Iran, or paid any attention to what happened in former communist states or knew anything about the rise of Islamic states or the freakin' REASON the Iraqi people hated Saddam this wouldn't be such a surprise.

*steam*

This is exactly why I think the U.S. has no business getting involved anywhere in the world anymore unless we're simply being hired for our military brawn. We simply don't have an educated population when it comes to geography, societies and cultures outside our own borders. It's dangerous that we're so powerful and so ignorant of the rest of the world.

This is even more reason why I desperately want to teach anthropology or about world cultures. I just wonder if it'll do any good at this point.

Being articulate

Found an interesting opinion article in the school paper today: Articulation acts as window to soul.

This is exactly how I feel when I read email messages that don't bother with capitalization, or use "u r" for "you are" etc.
