Award win for Alton Brown
5 June 2003, 4:38 PM

Cool! My favorite TV chef just won a James Beard Foundation Award (the Oscars for cookbooks) award for his book, "I'm Just Here For the Food in the Best Reference Title category.

Hey, it deserves an award! Not only is the book informative, it's a HOOT to read. If nothing else you must read his metaphoric description of slow oven cooking versus frying. I grin just thinking about it.

Summer Reading
5 June 2003, 4:27 PM

So what's on your summer reading list? A list I'm on asks this question on a yearly basis and I always hear about some nifty books that way.

I don't know just how much reading I'll do *this* summer, what with the new house, unpacking and all. Still, I have "A Short History of Finland" that I very much like to read and I've been intrigued enough by friends to get a copy of "The Beekeeper's Apprentice". I'll probably read that later this summer when I take a vacation.

Otherwise most of my reading will be Spanish-class textbook and workbook related. Even so, I'll probably have a pile of books waiting to be read in the Fall when I can (hopefully) relax a bit.
