Elke Tanzer has a link up to an article about a particularly disturbing
new business in Las Vegas. This is downright *scary*!! Forget being
ill or ticked off about it - I find it utterly FRIGHTENING that there's a
BUSINESS out there catering to the idea of men holding guns of any kind to
hunt down and "kill" women. Just a "game" my ass! Add to that the fact
that videos are made that the guys get to take home (and probably copy a
zillion times and sell) and now there's a whole fetish about hunting down
women. That doesn't exactly make me feel safe and secure on a daily basis.
Good gods, if this is what it takes for some guy to get off his rocks he
needs to see a freaking PSYCHOLOGIST.NOTE: (7/22/03) Okay, now my disgust is directed at stupid
reporters and the legitimate news media for not THROUGHLY investigating a
story. At least Snopes did some
homework.
I'm enough of an Internet veteran to be very skeptical about "news" I see
come across email from unknown sources. I'm usually the one informing
others about hoaxes. But when I see/read
news and information on a local or national news outlet there's a certain
amount of faith I put in the *professionalism* of the people in that
industry. I.e Checking the facts? Serious investigation? Being smart
enough not to get so completely and totally duped and then passing that
along to the rest of us?
**sigh**
Back int he mid-90's I started to seriously distrust the motivations of
reporters when they'd ask for an interview. I had too many bad experiences
when queried about the SFLAaEBS or DDEB. I can't stand Time or Newsweek
for that reason. Too many holes. And now, after so many high-profile
falsification scandals in some of the most trusted news outlets I have NO
trust in the veracity of ANY of that media. I hate (a) being lied to, (b)
having my time and passion wasted on fiction, and (c) inadvertently
helping some creep promote his product. It's just too bad that in a time
when news can travel around the world in the blink of an eye, that we can
trust very little of it.
