Extortion.
That's what it is, pure and simple. For those of you not in the know about SCO's antics of the past many,
many months, the gist of the story is this:
SCO Group Inc claims that the popular OS Linux includes source code
copyrighted by them and that this code and derivative code have been
used without its permission to develop the Linux 2.4 and 2.5 kernels.
Okay, fine. Except that they flat-out refuse to say what the (possibly)
offending code IS. Basically they keep saying "You're using bits of our
copyrighted code in there" and when asked which bits are theirs they say,
"We won't tell you!"
Extortion. Nobody knows for sure if their claims are true, because they
won't come out and say, "That, right there. That's the copyrighted code."
And why won't they do that you ask? Because then the open source community
would get to work fixing the problem - eliminating any copyrighted code.
Nearly overnight SCO would no longer have a case, and they'd lose any
chance at squeezing money out of someone.
Criminals.
