Cabeza de Vaca

It's up! We finished the Cabeza de Vaca web site for our Southwestern Writers Collection in the Special Collections department of the library.

Texas-State owns a 1555 edition of "La Relaci?n y Comentarios" by Alvar Nu?ez Cabeza de Vaca and now it's online. The entire book was digitized and translated and the web site lets you navigate through the actual pages of the book and read the translations. It went through two design iterations but it's finally settled and available to the public. I just think it's nifty, and it was cool to be a part of the project.

For those who don't know, "La Relaci?n" is Cabeza de Vaca's own story of the ill-fated Narv?ez expedition, which ended up on the Texas coast. The account is of great interest to literary scholars and anthropologists alike, for both the prototype narrative and the descriptions of much of the Southwest and the native tribes (now extinct) he encountered. About 23 paleoindian groups are described in fascinating detail.
