Youth spend more time on Web than TV
Teenagers and young adults spend more time on the Internet than watching television, indicating a shift in media consumption for a demographic prized by advertisers, said a new study released on Thursday.

Good students go on-line
Children who spend time on-line appear to perform better in school, according to a $1.5-million (U.S.) Michigan State University study. The three-year project - involving 90 families recruited through Dwight Rich Middle School and the Black Child and Family Institute in Lansing - researched the effects of home computer use on low-income families.

Bionic Youth
For children and teens all over the globe, technology is the primary medium through which they interact socially and recreationally. Until recently, however, no research existed to indicate whether or not the exposure (or perhaps overexposure) to technology has been a benefit or detriment to young minds. In the last five years researchers have found evidence suggesting that today's children are developing an entirely different set of skills than their parents due to the brain's ability to adapt. Video games have had a particularly notable effect on visual perception, though some scientists worry that the increase in visual stimuli results in stunted emotional development and other behavioral issues. Correlations have also been found between video gaming and increased IQ scores. Messaging technology research is still in its infancy, as scientists try to catalogue the various behaviors associated with the technology. What seems evident at this point is that the perceived relationship between avid technology use and loneliness may be overstated. Messaging also appears to improve social interaction, build confidence and increase the ability to multitask.

How the big names tame e-mail
Celebrities, CEOs and US Senators have developed various means of dealing with the hundreds of emails they receive each day. Although the crush of email can be a burden for high-profile people, it has become central to how many work and manage their lives. [Note: I remember how I used to get about 2,000+ emails a day in the early 90's when I was a part of several very active mailing lists. I learned a lot of strategies back then.]

NaNoWriMo!
24 October 2003, 12:28 PM

Eek! I didn't know it was going to start so soon. I've decided that I'm taking part in NaNoWriMo this year so I went to find out when the date was going to be.

So, who else out there has participated in this? Did you do anything before to get a story going in your head or did you just start with a blank paper and a funky idea the first day?

Via Nat Geo: What Does "Jihad" Really Mean to Muslims?
"Jihad" is a loaded term?and a concept that illustrates a deep gulf of miscommunication between Islam and the West. There are those in each community who see jihad as a clash of civilizations?and act on those beliefs. But jihad literally means "exerted effort" to most Islamic scholars and Muslims, and represents a range of activities. [...] The concept of jihad as a struggle for self-improvement is little known among non-believers. [Note: Ain't that the truth. I don't know how many times I have tried to explain the full meaning of this word as a broader concept to non-muslims only to find that it didn't sink in.]
