Jumping The Shark?
13 February 2004, 9:48 PM

Has American pop culture jumped the shark? John MacDonald of the The Arizona Republic thinks so, in his article An un-Fab moment signals a cultural shift and I think he may have a point.

For those who don't know, "jumping the shark" is a catch-phrase that's now commonly used to signal that moment when a popular television series has lost it's luster - that moment when the writers are stretching a bit too far for something new and different. It's that moment when you know "it's all downhill from here." The idea comes from the web site Jump The Shark, begun in 1997 with the purpose that TV history moment. The phrase itself is a reference to the moment in the popular show "Happy Days" when Fonzie jumps over a shark with his motorcycle.

I think proof for MacDonald's hypothesis was just a bit further down on my news page: Scott Peterson Docudrama Airs Before Jury Decides. I mean, come ON. This is almost a cultural cliche now.

Great Dead Women

One thing I've ranted with my friends about before, is how we often hear about some of the niftiest women only AFTER they've died. These two news items reminded me of those rants, though I'm happy to say that at least there was some press about these women when they were alive - both even have movies associated with them.

Feeling Icky
13 February 2004, 1:32 PM

Ugh. It's been a frustrating last couple of weeks. Jeff was mightily sick recently, and that probably set him up for the cold he has now. And the fact that I've worked late this week and haven't had enough sleep set *me* up for that same cold.

So we're home today because we're feeling icky, not really because of the weather. Still, the weather (they're predicting sleet and snow, and we already got some lseet last night) may keep us at home all day tomorrow. I'm only going to brave the cold one more time tonight in order to aquire some chocolate covered strawberries from Lammes candies.

I've been writing so much at work lately (creating training and policies etc.) that I've been lazy about writing here. Even so, I haven't felt like writing about much. I'm too tired and icky feeling to write about nifty. cool and fun stuff, and it seem many of my friends are feeling kinda icky and out-of-sorts these days as well.

I'm looking forward to blue skies, sunshine and balmy temperatures. Then my excuse for not writing at least can be the fact that I'm puttering away in my garden, rather than then fact that I'm taking Tylenol and haven't yet gotten out of my PJs.
