Why Anti-Histamines Put You To Sleep

Benadryl always hits me like a ton of bricks, and I take care to take even my Claritin right before I go to bed. Now I know a little better why anti-histamines make me so drowsy: Dog study finds histamines critical for waking up.

I'm trying to wrap my brain around how this might affect the depth and quality of sleep of people who suffer from allergies (and who aren't taking anti-histamines). Might they have more histamines (because of the allergies) in their brain cells and therefore sleep more fitfully?

I love news like this, because it always raises a half a dozen other questions for me. There's still plenty to be discovered when it comes to chemical interactions in the body and how it affects the numerous body systems.
