Animals and Disasters
16 August 2004, 3:49 PM

It's hurricane season, and disaster preparedness lists are everywhere in coastal cities. And though it's not something a lot of people think about, our pets need specific disaster preparedness too.

When a natural disaster devastates an area people and their animals often become separated. Flood victims can recount stories of seeing dogs, cats, horses and other familiar creatures in our care trying desperately to swim flood waters, escape burning or flooded barns or stranded on rooftops and debris. Disaster preparedness for your pet can help prevent you from becoming separated - or speed reunions after a disaster. Here's a few sites with information:

Recipe: Mango-Papaya Ice Cream
16 August 2004, 3:34 PM

Actually, this started out as a smoothie, but came out so thick that I couldn't really drink it easily. It seemed like it would make a good ice cream though, so I added some cream and some sugar and threw it into the ice creamer maker for a half hour. Heavenly!

Mango-Papaya Ice Cream

1 ripe papaya, cut into cubes
1 ripe mango, cut into cubes
1/2 ripe banana
1/2 cup soft tofu
1/2 cup plain (or vanilla) yogurt
1 Tablespoon honey
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 heavy whipping cream

Combine all ingredients and blend in blender until smooth. Transfer to ice cream maker and freeze according to manufacturers instructions.
